Seated Shoulder Rotation (S3)

Flow

Sit holding the WAV at shoulder height in an overhand grip at the swells or as wide as needed for your wrists and elbows to be aligned when you bend your elbows to roughly 90 degrees. Rotate at the shoulder to bring your arms down to an internally rotated position keeping wrists aligned with the elbows and ensuring the elbow joint remains fixed in space. Let the upper arm rotate in the capsule while wrist and shoulder blades stay in neutral. Rotate the shoulder in the opposite direction to bring your arms and WAV up to an externally rotated position. Repeat this movement pattern from external to internal rotation.

Focus

Encourage the upright postural stabilization and integration of shoulder centration that is helpful for the difficult education to correct "rounded shoulders".

Cues

VERBAL: Feel the connection of your feet to the ground and your pelvis to the surface beneath you allowing you to lengthen your spine towards the sky.

BE MINDFUL: Allow your joints expansion of space, feeling the shoulder blades reach gently into the sides of the room as you breathe and expand the ribs. * Can you feel your upper arm rotate in the capsule while wrist and shoulder blades stay in neutral? * Find the ease in the movement and fluidity in the rotation of the upper arm in the shoulder.

WAV INTERACTION: Keep the liquid in the WAV balanced throughout. Listen for any unleveling actions or rough waters. * Keep calm and quiet.

Common Compensations

  • Breath Hold/Valsalva
  • Decentration - Palmer Region
  • Decentration - Cervical Reclination
  • Abberant Weight Shifting
